Vkind - Lifestyle Mobile App
Redesigning Vkind’s vegan app under tight deadlines, balancing rapid UI updates with quick research and close collaboration with a remote dev team.
Overview
I joined the Vkind team as a contractor, tasked with redesigning the UI of their existing mobile app, which they planned to showcase at an upcoming event. With a looming deadline, I was asked to prioritize visual assets over UX considerations, and to bypass initial steps of the Design Thinking Process. However, I managed to conduct some “guerrilla research” which I complemented with internal user testing to validate key decisions.
In addition to the mobile redesign, I was also responsible for guiding design work for two new features. This was particularly challenging with a distributed product delivery team. I invested heavily in communication with the developers and introduced them to a few critical collaboration tools, ensuring smooth implementation.
Towards the end of the engagement, I had the opportunity to focus on more UX deliverables. I conducted several user surveys, led user interviews, and developed the first user personas for the organization.

Redesigning screens and adding components to the style guide
Next, I adjusted the navigation button setup, removing some icons to reduce cognitive load. Once I received approval, I refined the remaining components, incorporating them into the style guide once I was satisfied with the results.
Graphics for empty states
While navigating through the app, I noticed frequent empty states due to a lack of content, especially at the beginning of the user journey. To address this, I proposed implementing graphics for these empty states, which significantly improved the overall appearance.
Creating new flows
These two features were crucial for the company event as they were heavily promoted on social media and during the venue. To ensure everything functioned smoothly, a few colleagues and I thoroughly tested the workflow, identified areas for improvement, detected bugs, and collaborated closely with the developers to guarantee proper implementation of the designs.
Guiding New Users
The app had several features but they were difficult to discover for first-time users. I decided it would be beneficial to create an onboarding process to introduce users to the navigation buttons. I aimed to make this process as brief as possible, while also providing users with the option to skip it.

UX Research
User Interviews
The company had never conducted user interviews before. I established the research goals and then worked with a member of the marketing team to recruit five individuals familiar with the brand to participate in 30-minute interviews, conducted over Zoom.
Affinity Mapping
After gathering the information I created an affinity map to help me organize my findings and identify key themes and common user pain points.
User Persona
Based on my research analysis, I created the first User Personas with the aim of ensuring that future designs meet the goal and needs of the company's target audience.
Survey
The company event presented a great opportunity to survey attendees and gather feedback on the app. I collaborated with the marketing team to develop a survey for attendees to complete during the event.

Irritations
I like to see pictures of the food that I’m going to eat, and HappyCow usually doesn't have many pictures
I don’t like to realize the week before about a vegan event that I would like to attend, I need time to plan.
I use an app to scan products so it tells me if it's beneficial to me and if not, it recommends a different product. However it's not vegan and sometimes it recommends you non vegan food.
Google maps sometimes says that a place is vegan when it’s not. It’s hard to filter
In Happycow the pictures are really bad, so sometimes I miss places that I’ve been told are good and I didn’t choose them because of the photos.
Sometimes the filters at Happycow don't work, and it’s hard to find vegan places when I’m not in the location.
It’s hard to get the right food at the airlines, normally they mess up my order.

5/6
As my first paid UX/UI project, the experience of leading design decisions was invaluable and fulfilling. I always feel confident presenting designs, but it was nice to see how pleased the team was as well.
A highlight for me was conducting user interviews with participants based in the US, while working from Europe. This presented some unique challenges, but I really enjoyed the experience. It was a great opportunity to strengthen my cross-cultural communication skills and refine my research practices.
Another key learning was the complexity and importance of fluid communication within a distributed, remote team. Fostering close collaboration with the developers, specifically, presented obstacles but investing in these relationships undoubtedly enhanced my learning as a designer. I’m proud to have been a leading voice in the simple practice of collaboration: finding mutually agreeable times for sync meetings, introducing new tools, and proposing more efficient workflows all helped us achieve our goals and deliver more value to users.
Finally, working for a company that aligns with my personal values was incredibly motivating and something I hope to sustain in future engagements.
I invite you to download the app and explore the plant-based restaurants in your area.
