After fourteen years of performing on the global stage as a professional magician and hand shadow artist, I now help tech companies create seamless user experiences and design systems that work like magic. Live shows helped me understand people; now I design for them.
I got into tech in 2020, like a lot of people that year. At first, I had no idea what I wanted to learn; I just knew I wanted to try something new while my performing career was on “pause”. What I didn’t know was that the “pause” would last for years… and turn into a complete career change.
I started small, taking short weekly courses to explore the industry: Marketing, Google Ads, Software Development... and then I discovered UX. That was it. I was hooked. And it just felt natural. It turns out that Design Thinking has a lot in common with the way magicians approach their craft: research, ideation, prototyping, testing, refining… we use the same framework!
Knowing I wanted to take this seriously and fully aware I’d be switching careers in my 30s, I took a “sabbatical” year to really dive in. I joined a 10-month CareerFoundry bootcamp, read every UX book I could get my hands on, watched way too many Figma tutorials, and even faced the scary world of networking. That’s how I met some amazing designers who helped me land my first freelance projects, and eventually, my first full-time role on a cross-functional team.
I’m genuinely happy to be in this industry. Every day is a chance to grow, experiment, and sharpen my skills. It’s been an exciting journey so far, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
